Illinois Misdemeanors or Felonies: The Difference Can Be Life Changing

The Illinois Criminal Code classifies various crimes in either the misdemeanor or felony category. The misdemeanor category is far less serious, containing 3 classes (A, B, C) with sentences of up to one year in county jail and fines of up to $2,500. Felonies are divided into five classes (X, 1, 2, 3, 4), with sentences of one to 30 (or more) years in state prison and fines of up to $25,000. In addition, most felonies do not qualify for an expungement, meaning a felony conviction can remain on your record permanently.

Attorney Stacey A. McCullough understands the negative impact a felony, and often times a misdemeanor, can have on your future. For this reason, she works hard to challenge the State’s evidence, ensuring your rights were not violated by the police in an effort to defeat a guilty verdict. In the appropriate situation, she will work with you to gather mitigating evidence with an eye towards having a felony charge reduced to a misdemeanor. Stacey is a skilled negotiator and has had great success in obtaining lesser sentences on her clients’ behalf. Stacey thoroughly researches every angle, and if there is any hole in the prosecution’s case, she will take advantage of it to bring about a better outcome for you and your family.
